RE

At the Netherhall St James CE (VC) Infant & Nursery school, Religious education is conducted according to the NEW Agreed Syllabus for Kirklees, Calderdale and Leeds 2024-2029, entitled 'Believing and Belonging'.
The syllabus is designed around developing understanding of six learning pathways.

These have been inspired by ‘The Big Ideas in RE’ and act as the framework for sequencing learning in religion and worldviews at all key stages from age 5 to 18. While organising the curriculum along these pathways, learners concurrently develop substantive knowledge of specific religions/worldviews.

The syllabus recommends pupils study a series of core and focus units of work to understand the six learning pathways at each key stage.
To support the syllabus there is a suite of detailed planning for each of the core and focus units of work.

RE whole school overview

As a Voluntary Controlled Church of England school, our RE curriculum reflects the requirement for two-thirds of the teaching to be on Christianity, whilst also including coverage of the variety of world faiths and diversity between them.
RE is taught in regular, timetabled slots, equivalent to an hour a week. We provide a wide range of activities and there are plenty of opportunities for cross-curricular links with subjects such as Art, Music, Drama, PSHE and computing.

Why RE Matters - Taken from the Agreed Syllabus

“RE plays an important role in preparing pupils for their future, for employment and lifelong learning. It enhances their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development by:
• Developing awareness of the fundamental questions raised by human experiences, and of how religious teachings can relate to them;
• Responding to such questions with reference to the teachings and practices of religions and other belief systems, relating them to their own understanding and experience;
• Reflecting on their own beliefs, values and experiences in the light of their study.”
